I’d been watching the vacant spot between Kick Ass Cupcakes and When Pigs Fly Bread for a while, and just last week it bloomed into the Dairy Bar at Kick Ass Cupcakes. But I’m just going to call it the Kick Ass Dairy Bar. It’s now official – Davis Square is the Paris of Somerville. We have a bakery and a cheese shop.
I popped in today on my way home and checked out the selection of “farm fresh and local dairy milk, cream, butter, eggs, cheese, hand packed ice cream and more.” They also have some chocolate and other odds and ends, but let’s be honest, I was there for the cheese. I picked up a bright white brick of Myenberg aged goat milk cheddar and a package of adorable thimble-shaped “tiny artisinal cheeses” called Hanabells from Shy Brothers Farm in Westport, MA.
With a little help from a pear, some crackers, the omnipresent loaf of When Pigs Fly pumpernickel and some mizuna and arugula from J’s garden, I put together a couple of tastings for myself. There was a Marlborough (NZ, not MA) Sauvignon Blanc in there too. The Hannabells were creamy and mild with a nice note of sea salt and barely any rind. We’ll have to see if they last long enough to get more. I bought the plain kind, but they also come in herb and spicy formulae. I think the brothers should consider a variety pack.
The goat cheddar was something I’d never seen before. I didn’t know it was possible. I think it’s successful, but have to wonder if most people wouldn’t prefer cow cheddar or more traditional forms of goat cheese. I also made a sandwich of this cheese with some greens and pumpernickel. Will have to consider this for the next cheese sandwich challenge.

Since Universal Hub tagged me with the “locovore” “locavore” label, I wondered how close this spread was in terms of food miles. I did better than average, but ultimately not that well, since the Myenberg is from California. If I had made the sandwich with the Shy Brothers cheese, it would have done — bread from Maine, cheese from Massachussets, and greens from a Cambridge garden. But the Hanabells were better taken as canapes with a cracker (corner 7-11) and a slice of pear (organic from Harvest Coop, but probably from the southern hemisphere). In any case, Locovore Locavore Sandwich is a good name for a band or a blog. You read it here first.

If you’ve been following me on twitter (or in person for that matter, but that would be even weirder) you know that I’ve been craving a good savory scone. Heck, I would have settled for a bad one. I stuck out at several local outlets, but my craving was picked up by a good friend and local celebrity chef, <plug> who has a new food blog you absolutely must read. </plug> She made a couple of batches of cheese bacon and scallion scones, and I’ve been lucky enough to stow a few in my freezer. Hint: don’t bake them all unless you’re going to eat them all – freeze them individually and bake them on demand. You can read her side of the story and score the recipe at Grow Cook Eat. Well, that’s only part of a long techno-story developing on my desk. But it’s true. I raved about the Time Capsule in one of my last Ipswitch blog posts, and now I actually own one. It delivers on all its cool features, at least the ones I’ve tried (haven’t upgraded to Leopard yet) but it also runs disturbingly hot. I could have bought a USB coffee warmer for about $5 but instead I got an excellent access point and print sharing thingy. That also keeps my coffee warm. Viva Magnifica!

What’s more interesting, at least to the techie in me, is that I had a near-total hard drive failure on my iMac, and despite some inconvenience and expense, I lost very little data. And that was before I bought the Time Capsule.
Emails? Stored online with my email provider. Music? Stored on the ipod. Pictures? Well, that’s the weak link – some on flickr, some on CD, many on this blog, but a lot were on the drive. Documents? Those I actually backed up to a separate computer. So why buy a backup device like the Time Capsule? Because the drives used by those online providers are no better than the one I just bought, that’s why. Online backup is attractive too, since theft or disaster could wipe out both computer and backup, but the magnitude of media – photos and music (I don’t have many videos) – seems to make that impractical.

Ever since I topped off the scrabble set at Bloc 11 Cafe in Union square, I’ve been on the lookout for other public scrabble sets in need of repair. After all, what am I going to do with 96 extra letters? Earlier this week, I checked 1369 coffeehouse in Inman square, also looking for a good savory scone. Not only did they not have any useful scones, but their scrabble set was completely gone. The only way you’d know it had ever been there was by the lonely OSPD sitting on the game shelf. I’m not sure if complete scrabble set replacement is in my mandate.
Yesterday, I was helping L buy dirt at Economy hardware, (she bought it on her own, I helped carry it) and we dropped in at Caffe La Luna for some gelato. I hadn’t been back to La Luna Caffe since that time I decided to try the “Puffo” gelato. I should know by now that “blue” is not a flavor. In any case, I spied a scrabble set and resolved to come back and check it.
Today, I’m sitting here watching a jazz combo setting up and smelling some really good smells from the kitchen. I checked the set, and sure enough, it was 33% short on the letter G. Fixed that.

While I’m here, let me say that this is a wonderful cafe for many reasons, and there’s no sign of any more gelato puffo. There’s a big window open to the street where a new public space is almost finished, there’s live music, good coffee, real gelato, sandwiches and salads too. Free wifi and a decent number of electrical outlets. It’s got a wonderfully laid-back feeling, not the cramped and overcaffeinated vibe you often get at independent coffee places.
So now you know. The scrabble set is complete and the cafe is a cool place, so come on down.

I’m interested in charity from several perspectives – personally, I think it’s a moral duty; professionally, it’s baked into the business model where I work; and academically, I like to geek out on the behavioral economics. So, when this item came to my attention, I had to blog it. I blogged it at work, but I want to expand on the idea a bit here.
The short story is that somebody somewhere set up an online fundraising page that won’t take donations of less than $25. I think that’s foolish on a practical level and offensive on a philosophical level.
Why would you set a minimum donation? I suppose either it’s too expensive to process small donations, or you’re trying to encourage larger donations and are willing to take the risk that some people will just walk away.
First up, cost. I’m in this business. I know that fees for online transactions (or donations) are percentage fees and probably less than 10%. Credit card processing costs 2-3%. If there’s a service that charges a flat fee per donation, I don’t know about it. And if there is a service that charges such a fee that a $25 donation isn’t worth taking, I would call that service “theft.”
Second, encouraging larger donations. I think the $25 minimum is a bit too draconian. Look at how public radio does this – you can give any amount but you only get the mug or t-shirt at particular minimum levels. When you get a solicitation in the mail, it probably has boxes to check off at various levels, but I bet they wouldn’t send your check back if it were too small. And it might well cost them a couple of dollars to process a paper check. There are lots of positive ways charities can encourage larger donations, usually by giving recognition incentives or by demonstrating what good larger amounts can do, such as $x can feed a hungry child, $y can feed a family, etc.
Ok, I’m done with that rant. Well, actually, I’m not. Let’s suppose for a moment that it actually does cost $25 to process an online donation. Would you or should you accept a $26 donation? It’s a dollar, right?
I say yes, emphatically yes. In fact, I think if cost you $25 to process a donation, you should be willing to take a $20 donation, maybe even less, if it gets you one more donor, one more evangelist for your cause, one more address on your mailing list.
As a marketer, I regularly pay a few dollars for a sales lead. Not a sure thing at all. If I could pay a couple of dollars to get somebody on my list who has a proven track record of spending money on me, I think I would do it. Wouldn’t you?
As a quant-oriented marketer, I’m open to the possibility that this restriction actually turns out to raise more money. It’s possible that the people who up their donation outweigh those who walk away. I suppose on some level it’s worth testing, but I also have to wonder about the message that this kind of thing sends to the donors.
High price and exclusivity are positive brand attributes for luxury goods but hardly for charities. If you don’t want $10 more to help fight AIDS, I don’t think you’re really serious about fighting AIDS. And if you say that $10 isn’t enough, maybe it’s all some people can spare today, but maybe in the future they’ll have more, and I don’t suppose they’re likely to give it to somebody who turned them down last time.
